You know how
mejor means
better?
Well, forget that for a second, jiji.
Because the chunk
a lo mejor takes a cheeky little detour in the meaning department!
It just means:
👉
maybe / perhaps
Here’s an example from
Emilio the Maguey Magician (at approx. 17:06); he’s talking about different pulquerías:
Si no le agrada, pues la otra a lo mejor…If you don’t like that one, maybe you’ll like another…
And, yes, it does indeed work much like
quizás or
tal vez, and you can normally mix and match the three
sin problemas!
Here’s an example of mixing and matching
tal vez and
a lo mejor from
the interview with Mateo from Xochimilco (at approx. 24:02); he’s talking about ajolotes being able to regenerate limbs:
Pues sí, don, tal vez, o característica natural de corregir un miembro, a lo mejor, que se le cayó por algún ataque o por alguna situación.Well, yes, a gift, perhaps, or a natural ability to regenerate a limb that maybe it lost in an attack or something.
💡 In casual Mexican Spanish, you’ll also sometimes hear an extra little
y:
A lo mejor y sí.Yeah, maybe.
A lo mejor y nos da tiempo.Maybe we’ll have enough time.
A lo mejor y no viene.Maybe he/she won’t come.
It’s a
VERY common colloquial add-on in Mexican Spanish with chunks that express possibility or wishes:
ojalá y / igual y / capaz y / etc.
