There's an app, sorry, a chunk for that ;) No te lo tomes a mal (pronoun explanation down below 👇) Here's what it means: 👉 don’t take this the wrong way / don’t take offense / don’t take it personally So yeah, it’s one of those classic little softener chunks you can whip out before saying something delicate.
The traffic light explanation 🚦You can think of tomarse algo a mal like a traffic light: 🟢 me / te / se / nos = the green light = changes depending on WHO IS TAKING SOMETHING BADLY 🔴 lo = the red light = USUALLY STAYS THE SAME 🟡 tomé / tomaste / tomó / tomes / tomamos = the yellow light = changes depending on WHO IS TAKING SOMETHING BADLY AND WHEN Se lo tomó a mal. He/she took it the wrong way. Me lo tomé a mal. I took it personally. No te lo tomes a mal. Don’t take what I’m saying the wrong way. 💡 Because lo usually refers to what was said or done, it generally stays the same. BUT if you replace it with a specific feminine noun, it CAN change: No te tomes la crítica a mal. / No te la tomes a mal. Don’t take the criticism the wrong way.
⚠️ IMPORTANT ⚠️You’ll also hear the non-pronominal version: tomar algo a mal. Lo tomó a mal. He took it the wrong way. Le conté todo y no lo tomó a mal. You’ll also hear it when someone reacts badly to something:
