This one’s a must-know phrase (unfortunately!). It’s a VERY Mexican way of saying that someone’s trying to scam you or take advantage of you Now, in my experience, you won’t get charged “gringo tax” by everyone here in Mexico; I’ve been to countries where foreigners are literally charged more by default and Mexico ain’t one of them. After 10 years, I’d say I know rough price ranges for things, and honestly, 95% of the time I get charged the right price. Though, the guy in the Pokémon store the other day trying to charge my son and me 1050 pesos for a box of cards when the handwritten label said 1000 was definitely a bit suspicious, lol. So yeah, obviously there ARE dishonest people about too... Anyway, verle la cara a alguien just means: 👉 to rip someone off / to play someone 💡 And you’re also going to hear the following variations: verle la cara de extranjero a alguien = to rip someone off / take advantage of them because they’re a foreigner verle la cara de menso / tonto / pendejo a alguien = to play someone / take advantage of someone verle la cara de rico a alguien = to think someone’s loaded and overcharge them
