Ya se echó a perder

(chunk)
B1 (¡Ya le agarras la onda!)Used EVERYWHERE 🇲🇽Standard Spanish 😌

🧠 What it means

This one's just a useful way of saying that something's gone bad (often said while peering into the fridge)! 🥴 👉 it's gone bad (i.e., it's no longer edible) / it's ruined 💡 Oh, and it's also used to talk about something broken or damaged! Or even just a situation that's gone south… ¡Acaban de anunciar alerta de huracán! Ya se nos echaron a perder las vacaciones…
They just announced a hurricane alert! That's our vacation ruined…

🌪️ When to whip it out

Anytime your fridge turns into a science experiment:

¡Ay, no! El queso ya se echó a perder.
Ugh! The cheese has gone off.

— ¿Y ese pollo?
— Ya se echó a perder.

— And that chicken?
— It's gone bad.

And you can also use it when something breaks, or a situation's gone south:

— ¿Y tu celular?
— Ya se echó a perder. Tengo que comprar otro.

— And your phone?
— It's broken. I need to buy another one.

⚠️ Tone

✅ Standard Spanish, but super common in Mexico.

✅ Not rude or slangy.

✅ You'll hear it from abuelitas and roomies alike.
