🧠 What it means

Ever feel like the whole si fuera tú + conditional structure is a bit, well, stiff? Because let's be honest… it IS a bit of a mouthful. ¿Y qué crees? (which is an EXCELLENT chunk in and of itself, by the way!). Spanish speakers think so too! Which is why they very often replace it with a simple: yo que tú. Yep, yo que tú just means: 👉 if I were you (but colloquial) 💡 You only change the first part of the structure, so you'll still need to use the conditional in the second clause: Yo que tú, no lo haría.
If I were you, I wouldn't do it.

🌪️ When to whip it out

Whenever you want to give someone advice by saying what YOU would do in their position:

Yo que tú, hablaría con él.

If I were you, I’d talk to him.

Yo que tú, no le diría nada todavía.

If I were you, I wouldn’t tell her anything yet.

Yo que tú, aprovecharía la oportunidad.

If I were you, I’d take the opportunity.
