🧠 What it means
If you weren't mightily confused the first time you heard someone exclaim a huevo, well, it's very possible that you were Mexican in a previous life.
Because a huevo makes absolutely no damn sense!
I mean, UN HUEVO is an egg.
Yep, a humble egg.
So what gives?
Well, the thing is that in Mexican Spanish huevo also has another more vulgar meaning… a testicle.
Yeah, if you're a bloke, tus huevos are your balls…
Unless, of course, you're actually referring to your eggs… 🥴
Anyway, there are a literal plethora of phrases derived from huevo, the undisputed king of which has to be: ¡A huevo!
And as an exclamation it's very often celebratory, a bit like:
👉 Hell yeah! / Fuck yeah! / Let's fucking go!
But it doesn't always have to be so explosive…
Yep, sometimes it's a bit more subtle:
👉 Of course! / You bet! / Damn right!
And that ain't all…
Because when part of an actual sentence, a huevo often implies that you HAVE to do something.
A bit like:
👉 mandatory / whether you like it or not / you have to
Confused yet?
Welcome to the weird and wonderful world of the Mexican huevo! 🥚
💡 When talking about all things mandatory you might also hear de a huevo —
No quisiera ir a esa excursión escolar, pero es de a huevo.I really don't want to go on that school trip, but it's mandatory.
🥚 Oh, and you may also hear the jokey/euphemistic version of a huevo: a producto de gallina 🐔
🌪️ When to whip it out
When something good happens and you want to express yourself like a Mexican who just found out that tacos are 2 for 1!
— ¿Ya te dieron el trabajo? — ¡A huevo! — Did you get the job? — Hell yeah!
When someone asks you something and the answer is a confident 'yes'!
¡A huevo! = Of course! / You bet! / Damn right!
— Oye, me dijeron que tú tienes entradas para el concierto... — ¡A huevo! ¿Cuántas necesitas? — Hey, someone told me you had tickets for the concert… — You bet! How many do you need?
— ¿Sabes dónde venden tacos al pastor bien chingones? — A huevo, hay unos buenísimos en la esquina. — Do you know where they sell really good tacos al pastor? — You bet, there are some amazing ones on the corner.
— ¿Entonces sí vas? — A huevo que sí. — So are you going? — Damn right I am.
When you have zero choice in a matter!
a huevo = mandatory / whether you like it or not / have to
Tengo que ir a huevo.
I literally have to go.
O sea, no quiero ir… pero tengo que ir a huevo.
I mean, I don't want to go… but I have to.
When you're trying to force something that clearly shouldn't be forced…
¡Estás viendo que no cabe y a huevo lo quieres meter!
It's obvious it doesn't fit and you're still trying to force it in!
A huevo quiere tener la razón.
He just has to be right.
