BUT in Mexican slang, it often has nothing to do with actual laws.
It’s more like:

➡️ a must / a classic / something you just have to do
So yeah, feel free to whip it out whenever something feels guaranteed, expected, inevitable, or practically compulsory.

That’s a given. / That’s just how it is.
Si andas en moto, de ley te vas a caer alguna vez.
If you ride a motorcycle, you’re bound to fall off sooner or later.
Si vas al tianguis con hambre, de ley acabas comprando comida.
If you go to the tianguis hungry, you’re bound to end up buying food.
En una boda mexicana, de ley alguien termina bailando Payaso de Rodeo.
At a Mexican wedding, someone is inevitably going to end up dancing to Payaso de Rodeo.

ser de ley = to be a must / practically mandatory
Es parada de ley.
It’s a mandatory stop. / You have to stop there.

Tacos after a night out are basically mandatory.
