This one’s pure spoken Spanish gold.
And honestly, it took me a longggg time to figure out how to use!
Let me present to you: así de que
A little (but mighty!) chunk that will make your stories come alive.
Mexicans use it to act out reactions, describe vibes, give examples, or keep a story flowing.
It often works like the English:
👉 I was like / acting like / we’re talking...
The classic example is:
Y yo así de que: “¿Qué?”And I was like: “What?”
So yeah, it sometimes works like the English: I was like.
BUT (slowly opens Pandora's Box)... it can also describe a vibe, set up a mini-scene, or work as spoken filler.
More on that below ⬇️
🌪️ When to whip it out
1️⃣ When you want to act out a reaction or vibe, perfect for storytelling:
Me quedé así de que: “¿Neta?”
I was like: “Seriously?”
And everyone was like: “What the fuck just happened?”
Y yo así de que: “Pos bueno.”
And I was just like: “Well, alright then.”
And the other guy was, like, all obedient.
El morrito así de que todo emocionado.
The kid was, like, all excited.
2️⃣ When you introduce a setup or imagined mini-scene:
La dinámica era así de que llegabas, dabas tu nombre y ya te pasaban al salón.
The setup was basically: you’d arrive, give your name, and then they’d let you into the room.
We’d play wrestlers, like: “I’m this one and you’re this one.”
3️⃣ When you want to say like / you know, as a filler:
Mi top uno que hago así de que todos los días es dormir.
My number-one thing to do, like, every day, is sleep.
I’d watch, like, Gucci, Dior, Versace runway shows and things like that.
Me compré así de que mil cosas.
I bought, like, a thousand things.
4️⃣ When you downplay or qualify how true something is:
Pues, así de que me gustara, como que me gustara tanto, no.
Well, it’s not like I actually liked any of them that much.
Así de que me encantara, pues tampoco.
It’s not like I absolutely loved it either.
⚠️ Tone
✅ VERY common in casual Mexican speech.
📖 Great for storytelling.
✅ Very colloquial and informal.
⚠️ NOT for formal writing; this is a linguistic quirk of spoken Spanish.
