In fact, I think I'm going to give it
super chunk status. 🎉
And yeah, it can indeed function as a filler word… but that ain't the whole story.
You see, Mexicans also use it when they want to
clarify what they mean,
rephrase something,
spell out the implication of something, or
frame a reaction.
So, depending on the situation, it can mean any of the following:

⚠️ IMPORTANT ⚠️At the start of a sentence,
o sea often isn’t a true “thinking filler” like
este or
eh.
It’s more of a conversational way of easing into what you want to say (often when framing a reaction).
So, if you’re at the taco stand and
el taquero asks you what you want, most Mexicans would opt for
Esteeee… or
Ehhhhh… while they mull it over.
O sea wouldn’t really be the natural choice.
Just like in English, tbh (think classic hesitation fillers like
umm or
errr, instead of
like).
🍓 Using
o sea repeatedly as a filler word mid-sentence can sound a bit
fresa / mirrey, especially when said in a slow, drawn-out kinda way.
So yeah, maybe don’t go slotting it in after every word (unless that’s the look you’re going for)!
