Claro que no

Claro que no

A1 (¡Vas empezando!)Used EVERYWHERE 🇲🇽Standard Spanish 😌

🧠 What it means

Ever wondered how to say “no” more emphatically in Spanish? Was that a resounding “Sí, señor”? Well, let me introduce you to: ¡Claro que no! Which is about as emphatic as neutral language gets (though there is a VERY Mexican chunk that gives it a run for its money… see below)! And it just means: 👉 Of course not! / Obviously not!
💡 If you want to give an emphatic response in the opposite direction, there’s also ¡Claro que sí! Claro que sí. Vale mucho la pena.
Of course. It's totally worth it. —¿Quieres venir con nosotros?
—¡Claro que sí!

—Wanna come with us?
—Of course!

🌵 There is a more Mexican alternative that's equally emphatic: ¿Cómo crees? BUT they’re NOT like-for-like synonyms: claro que no = general emphatic NO cómo crees = rejects the IDEA / ASSUMPTION itself Check out the full ¿Cómo crees? entry to find out more! 😉

🌪️ When to whip it out

Whenever you want to strongly reject an idea or make it clear that something ISN’T the case:

¿Es fácil? Claro que no.
Is it easy? Of course not.
¿Es perfecto? Claro que no, pero sí funciona.
Is it perfect? Of course not, but it does work.
¿De verdad crees que le voy a decir? Claro que no.
Do you honestly think I’m going to tell him? Of course not.

—¿Te arrepientes?
—¡Claro que no!

—Do you regret it?
—Of course not!

⚠️ Tone

VERY common and natural.

✅ Stronger and more emphatic than a simple no.

✅ Not slangy, vulgar, or particularly Mexican.
