Nomás que

🧠 What it means

Here’s another chunk that’s gonna make you sound SUPER-DUPER Mexican. 🌵 I kid you not. Nomás (get the full lowdown HERE) is a contraction of nada más (which normally means just or only), and in Mexican Spanish it’s used WAYYYY more than solamente or solo. Its chunky form, nomás que, usually works like a warning or condition: 👉 Only thing is… 👉 Just watch out, because… 👉 But… 💡I like to think of nomás que as the spicy Mexican version of but! 🌶️

🌪️ When to whip it out

When you want to lay down a condition, give a cheeky warning, or point out a downside:

Nomás que no se entere tu mamá.
Just don’t let your mom find out.
Nomás que está medio lejos, eh.
Just so you know, it’s kinda far.
Nomás que te toca pagar a ti.
Only thing is… you’re paying.
Me gustaría ir, nomás que no tengo dinero.
I'd like to go, but I don’t have any money.

Oh, and it can also mean as soon as in certain contexts:

Nomás que llegue, te aviso.
I'll let you know as soon as I arrive.
Nomás que me vista, salimos.
Just let me get dressed, and we'll head out.

⚠️ Tone

✅ Super-duper Mexican.

✅ Feels casual, but can be a little passive-aggressive.

❌ Don’t use it in business emails (unless you're rage-quitting 😎).
