Desmadre (very loosely, “de-mother-ing” 💀... which sounds ominous as hell!) does a lot of heavy lifting!

At its core it always means the same thing — mess, chaos, and disorder — but that chaos shows up in a LOT of different flavors.

Well, the verb tells you everything:

echar desmadre → The FUN one. Banter, laughs, shooting the shit. Usually not “destroying property”, but definitely not sitting quietly with herbal tea either.

armar un desmadre → The DRAMATIC one. To cause chaos, kick up a fuss, or cause a scene.

se hizo / se armó un desmadre → The THINGS-GOT-MESSY one. The situation went south.

estar hecho un desmadre → The WRECKED one. Works for rooms, plans, AND people after a rough night.

La cocina quedó hecha un desmadre después de hacer chilaquiles.
