Ok, here's another BEAST for y'all. 👹
And I mean beast in the best possible way.
Because once you start hearing como que, you’ll realise Mexicans use it literally ALL. THE. TIME.
Yep, it’s one of those chunks that once you learn, you’ll start hearing it everywhere (which is a very common phenomenon in language learning, btw).
It’s basically the Spanish version of:
👉 kind of / sort of / it feels like / I get the sense that👀 ¡Pero ojo!
The English translation ain’t always clean (as is often the case with filler words)!
A lot of the time, como que is about making the sentence feel fuzzy, approximate, or less blunt.
So instead of saying:
No me gustó.I didn’t like it.
You can soften it with:
Como que no me gustó.It didn’t really do it for me.
💡 Oh, and you might also come across: no es como que + subjunctive...

🌪️ When to whip it out
1️⃣ When you want to describe a vague feeling or impression about something:
como que = it kind of feels like
Como que ya no me cae tan bien.
I don’t think I like him as much anymore.
Como que este lugar está medio raro.
This place feels kind of weird.
No sé, como que algo no me cuadra.
I dunno, something kind of doesn’t add up.
Como que le falta algo a la comida.
It feels like the food is missing something.
2️⃣ When you want to soften an opinion or judgment:
como que = kind of / sort of / not really
Está padre, pero como que no es mi estilo.
It’s cool, but it’s not really my style.
Sí está bonito, pero como que está muy caro.
It IS nice, but it’s kinda expensive.
Como que no me convenció.
It didn’t really convince me.
3️⃣ With ya, when something is changing or starting to feel true:
como que ya... = it’s getting to the point where…
Como que ya me estoy cansando.
I’m kind of starting to get tired.
Como que ya urge hacer algo.
It’s kind of getting to the point where we need to do something.
Como que ya perdió fuerza.
It feels like it’s lost some of its impact. / It doesn’t hit the same anymore.
Como que ya no está de moda.
It doesn’t seem to be as fashionable anymore.
4️⃣ As pure spoken glue while you’re finding an idea, a bit like the English like:
Es que, no sé, como que... no me sentí cómodo.
It’s just, I dunno, like... I didn’t feel comfortable.
O sea, como que entre nosotros sabemos a qué nos referimos.
I mean, like, between us, we know what we’re talking about.
