🧠 What it means

This tiny chunk might look innocent… but it’s actually an ABSOLUTE BEAST (in the best possible way!). 👺 It can work like any of the following, depending on context: 👉 because 👉 it’s just that 👉 the thing is It’s one of those chunks that’ll make your Spanish sound WAY more natural without needing any fancy grammar. Oh, and you’ll hear it ALL. THE. TIME. in Mexico!

🌪️ When to whip it out

When giving an explanation (it’s similar to because or it’s just that in this context):

¿Por qué no fuiste a la fiesta?
Es que tenía mucho trabajo.
— Why didn’t you go to the party?
— Because I had a lot of work.

¿Por qué no vas a salir?
Es que está lloviendo.
— Why aren’t you going out?
— Because it’s raining.

When diving into an explanation WITHOUT being asked (usually an excuse):

Perdón por llegar tarde, es que había mucho tráfico.
Sorry I’m late; the traffic was awful.
Lo siento… Es que no sabía que venías.
Sorry… It’s just that I didn’t know you were coming.

When softening an opinion or showing reluctance:

Es que, pensándolo bien, quizás no sea la mejor idea.
It’s just that, thinking about it, maybe it’s not the best idea.
Es que no estoy muy de acuerdo.
It’s just that I don’t really agree.

When highlighting an important point:

Es que hay que hacer el trato ya.
The thing is, we need to close the deal now.
Es que, si no actuamos ahora, podría ser demasiado tarde.
The thing is, if we don’t act now, it might be too late.
