Este

(muletillas)
B1 (¡Ya le agarras la onda!)Used EVERYWHERE 🇲🇽Standard Spanish 😌

🧠 What it means

All hail THE KING of Latin American muletillas. And I say Latin American because this use of este is MUCH more common in Latin America than in Spain. And how is it used? Well, it's basically your CLASSIC hesitation filler word. So you'll hear people using it when they need a second to think. A bit like the English: 👉 umm / er / uh

🌪️ When to whip it out

When you need a moment to think:

Este… no sé si voy a poder.
Umm… I’m not sure if I’m going to be able to.
Este… ¿cómo te explico?
Umm… how do I explain it?

— ¿Quiere salsa?
— Esteee… sí, pero poquita.
— Would you like salsa?
— Ummm… yeah, but just a little.

— ¿Sabes dónde queda Metro Juárez?
— Sí… este… sobre esta misma calle a unas dos, tres cuadras.
— Do you know where Metro Juárez is?
— Yes… um… on this same street, about two or three blocks away.

And it’s also often used when you want to ease into what’s coming next:

Este… te quería pedir un favor.
Umm… I wanted to ask you a favor.
Este… la neta no me encantó.
Umm… honestly, I didn’t love it.
Este, pues… no sé si sea buena idea.
Umm, well… I’m not sure if it’s a good idea.

⚠️ Tone

VERY common in Mexico and much of Latin America.

✅ All about the hesitation, baby.

✅ Completely neutral (though if you throw it in after every word, you'll probs sound a little bit nervous!)
