¡Dame! That sounds next-level rude, doesn’t it? Well, actually, it’s not… Yep, it’s actually a super common chunk when you’re ordering food or buying something. In context it’s normal and polite (especially deme, which is the formal usted form)… depending on tone, obvs. I’d say its English equivalents are: 👉 Can you give me… / Can I have… (lit. give me)

🌪️ When to whip it out

Whenever you’re ordering or buying, especially at small stores, markets, street food stalls, etc.

Dame tres tacos de pastor, por favor.
Can I have three al pastor tacos, please.
Deme medio kilo de jitomate, por favor.
Give me half a kilo of tomatoes, please.

⚠️ Tone

✅ Deme = polite and respectful.

✅ Dame = more casual, so DON’T use it with elders, etc.

✅ Both are totally standard in Mexico (100% not rude if followed with por favor / porfa and a respectful tone of voice)

🚫 Just shouting ¡Dame! in a demanding way WOULD sound pretty rude, though! 🙊
