Here's another chunk for those of you who like the family-friendly stuff.
Well, family-friendly might be a stretch as you technically
SHOULDN'T use this in front of kids.
But in practice, I'd say a lot of Mexicans
DO (even some of the peeps who say they don't… see poll below!).
Bold claim, I know, and as I'm demonstrating in Voces, everyone does have their own linguistic footprint. I very much doubt that
Adán the Mariachi uses
no manches, for example.
But, honestly, I've heard
A LOT worse.
I was genuinely shocked by something I heard being shouted at a kid in a
fraccionamiento in
Tláhuac the other day... (and I'm
NOT easily shocked!)
So, yeah, I'm definitely
NOT saying that all Mexicans say this, or pretending that it isn't super casual and slangy (it is!).
BUT my 4-year-old learnt it from my
suegra and she ain't exactly no slang-slinger!
Pero
al fin y al cabo,
no manches is one of the most common reaction chunks in Mexican Spanish!
It's essentially a euphemism (lit.
don't stain) for the more vulgar
no mames (see how they weigh up down below).
Now, look it up on Google or AI and you'll probably be told it means something like:
➡️
No way! / Come on!
But,
en la humilde opinión de tu servidor, that doesn't really do it justice.
Because, in the real world,
no manches is a super versatile reaction to literally anything surprising, ridiculous, impressive, annoying, disgusting, scary, etc.
And it can translate to any of the following…
👉
No way! / Wow! / Come on! / Come off it! / Jesus! / That's crazy! / Oh man…
Yep, context is king once again, jiji. 👑
🚨 A word (editor's note: 119, ahem) of warningNo manches is honestly pretty mundane as far as Mexican slang goes.
But it
IS still slang, so you do have to be careful who you use it with!
I personally
WOULDN'T use it in situations where you'd avoid slang generally: job interviews, important meetings, serving customers you don't know, with the doctor, etc.
Terms and conditions apply, though, because I can also imagine it being used in
ALL the above situations if you know the person well.
Apart from maybe the job interview… unless you're being interviewed by your cousin, that is! Yep, nepotism is alive and well here in Mexico.
Here's what actual Mexicans have to say on the matter (a poll we ran a while back):
💀 No manches vs no mamesSooooo, where does
no manches rank against its bad boy cousin?
Well, as a matter of fact, the two can be used in
VERY similar situations.
No manches, está bien caro.Jesus, it's so expensive.
No mames, está bien caro.FUCK, it's so expensive.
Did you spot the difference? 😉
Yep,
no mames is
A LOT more vulgar!
And I mean
A LOT!
no manches = much softer / more socially acceptable
no mames = extremely vulgar
Useful patterns 🧩no manches + qué + emotionThe go-to slangy way to react to something (both positive and negative):No manches, qué miedo.Jesus, that's scary.
No manches, qué asco.Ugh, that's disgusting.
No manches, qué triste.Oh man, that's so sad.
No manches, qué chido.Wow, that's so cool.
No manches, qué coraje.God, that's infuriating.
no manches + question with cómoA VERY natural way to express disbelief:No manches, ¿cómo que ya renunciaste?Jesus, what do you mean you've already quit?
No manches, ¿cómo le hiciste? No way, how did you do it?
No manches, ¿cómo vas a pagar todo eso?Come off it, how are you going to pay for all that?
no manches + ya clauseHere, no manches reacts to something that has ALREADY happened or to a new development that feels surprising, sudden, or unexpected:¡No manches, ya son las diez!Jesus, it's already ten.
No manches, ya me dio miedo.Jeez, I'm scared now.
¡No manches, ya se acabaron!I can’t believe there aren’t any left!
¡No manches, ya van cinco!Jesus, that's five already!
no manches + ni clauseA useful way to strongly reject an idea or express negativity:No manches, ni quiero imaginar.Jesus, I don't even want to imagine.
Ay, no manches, ni que fuera millonario.Oh, come on, it's not like I'm a millionaire.
No manches, ni que fuera el fin del mundo.Come on, it's not like it's the end of the world.
💡
Ni que + imperfect subjunctive is a
VERY useful chunk in its own right, by the way!
no manches + pobre + personYou can also use it when you feel sorry for someone:No manches, pobre güey.Oh man, poor guy.
No manches, pobre señora.Oh man, poor woman.
No manches, pobrecito.Aww man, poor thing.
no manches + negative commandThis often has more of a come on / seriously / don't do that vibe:No manches, no hagas eso.Come on, don't do that.
No manches, no le digas eso.Come on, don't tell her that.
No manches, no gastes tanto.Jeez, don’t spend so much.
no manches + pero clauseYep, you can even use no manches as a reaction before continuing your thought:No manches… pero ¿cómo pasó eso?Whoa... but how did that happen?
No manches… pero bueno, seguimos de todas formas.Man… but whatever, we’re carrying on anyway.
Oh, and it doesn't have to come at the beginning of a sentence! You can also whack it on the end:Compra uno nuevo, no manches.Just buy a new one, come on.
Está carísimo, no manches. It's ridiculously expensive, Jesus.
No puedes vivir así, no manches. You can't live like that, jeez.
