How Vulgar Are Mexican Swear Words? 🌶️

The Groserías Calibration Map: (nearly!) every Mexican swear word and vulgar phrase, mapped by how vulgar it is (👵 → ☢️) and how hostile it is (❤️ → 💀).

Why did we make a Mexican Swear Word Map?

Well, because vulgarity and hostility ain't the same thing!

An expression can be extremely vulgar without being hostile. Chunks such as está chingón, a huevo and a toda madre can express genuine excitement, affection or admiration.

Meanwhile, a word such as idiota is not especially vulgar, but it can still sound cold and insulting. That's why the map measures both vulgarity and warmth.

The abuelita test...

Would you comfortably say it in front of your Mexican grandmother? Expressions at the mild end of the map, such as chin, miércoles and no manches, are usually safer choices (depending on the abuelita, lol).

Tone changes everything...

The same Mexican swear word can sound affectionate, impressed or genuinely threatening depending on your tone, facial expression and relationship with the other person.

The scores below are practical starting points, not fixed rules for every conversation.
